He olivat sopivasti täällä, eivätkä kertoneet, että he ovat WWF:n sopimuksen alaisia.

Vincent Virgil? Kuinka idioottimainen nimi. Kuitenkin. He ovat aivan liian vihreitä kantaakseen kokonaisia segmenttejä.

Heh, heh. Kiitos tästä tom_killer. Sinulla on selvästi silmää uuden joukkueen rakentamiseen.

He keräsivät loistavaa heatia muuten varsin apaattiselta yleisöltä.

FDR, senkin idiootti. Yritätkö tuhlata pomosi rahat kaikki heti kättelyssä? Lavasteet eivät ole ilmaisia. Eikä haastattelijanne Kip Wingerin vakuutus - joka muuten, miksi valitsitte juuri hänet? Hänhän on aivan surkea!

Tästä on hyvä jatkaa.

Sitten muutama ilmoitusluontoinen asia. Sovin Giant Baban kanssa jonkinlaisesta yhteistyökumppanuudesta. Jahka teillä on täysin omia painijoita, voitte lähettää osan heistä All Japaniin hakemaan kokemusta. Ennen sitä Baba on kuitenkin luvannut lähettää muutaman omista painijoistaan ainakin muutamaksi viikoksi tänne.

Ja toinen, isompi juttu. Teidän kahdeksannessa jaksossa, mikä esitetään 23.2., Ric Flair saapuu Coloradoon puolustamaan NWA-mestaruutta. Luonnollisesti mestaruus ei tule vaihtamaan omistajaa. Teillä kuitenkin pitää olla hänelle haastaja siihen mennessä.

Ja kolmanneksi. En tiedä kuinka tarkkaan tunnette maatamme tai tapojamme, mutta lähetän teille liitteenä NWA:n virallisen sääntökirjan. Kenties opitte jotain.

Jim Cornette Drive Through
Brian Last: “So Jim. Something special happened this week. You’ve heard of this?”

Cornette: “Well my twitter did blow up so I might have heard of something but please continue.”

Brian Last: “WWE uploaded the very first episode of Championship Wrestling from Colorado. How come you’ve never talked about this?”

Cornette: “Well, it didn’t really matter in the long run, right? It folded like after 2 or 3 months. I actually thought that the tapes were forever gone too.”

Brian Last: “Well to no surprise we’ve gotten loads of questions about it. So many big names in such a minor territory. Hansen, Brody, Butcher, Rock n’ Roll, Midnight… what do you remember about it?”

Cornette: “Not much if we’re being honest but I did watch the episode because I was curious. It was better than I remembered but it might be that it went to shit after few episodes.”

Brian Last: “How did they manage to get so many big stars of the era? I would imagine that would have been expensive.”

Cornette: “Well, the boss - the P whatever from Soviet Union - he was good friends with all the big shots. Crockett, Owens, Gagne, Jarrett, Fritz and so on. And Bob Geigel really, really liked him, apparently. Plus he was loaded and didn’t care how his money was used. Though the way he ran it I’m pretty sure he used it for tax evasion or money laundering or something.”

Brian Last: “How so?”

Cornette: “Well.. he was never really there. He had his stupid goons run the place with no imput from the man himself.”

Brian Last: “What do you remember about this mysterios Pavel?”

Cornette: “I only met him like once or twice so not much. He seemed friendly and quiet but that’s about it. Like I said, he really wasn’t there.”

Brian Last: “One thing lots of people have asked - how was announcing with Solie? We all know you and Solie did some announcing together few years later in WCW but this was way before.”

Cornette: “Solie was always a pro. I could tell that he didn’t care for all the angles but he never told anyone whether he liked it there or not.”

Brian Last: “I’m used to seeing Solie look like he’s hungover as fuck but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look that pale.”

Cornette: “Well, knowing Solie he might just have been doing commentary after an afternoon in a bar. You could never tell with Solie if he was sober or black out drunk. That’s the way he was.”

Brian Last: “One thing he said that was weird was that he told they were in Loveland, Colorado. Is it a nickname to a city there or what was that?”

Cornette: “Well, no, silly. It is a city there, actually called Loveland. Yeah, imagine that. You would think that settling in Colorado Springs or Denver would’ve made sense but for some reason they chose Loveland. I guess they found a cheap studio to film their TV or something. I don’t really know.”

Brian Last: “If the town was called Loveland… how were the rats?”

Cornette: *laughs uncontrollably* “Well let’s just say that they were really loving people and leave it at that.”

Brian Last: “One thing I noticed immediately and I think many others did too - why did they hire Kip Winger of all people as their ring announcer? I think this was just before Alice Cooper and way before his solo success.”

Cornette: “I have honestly no idea. I think they wanted as many local celebrities as possible. I’m pretty sure he had been part of that one Kix album that had some success. Apparently that counts as a celebrity.”

Brian Last: “Did you think he was any good?”

Cornette: “Oh he was the drizzling shits! *bursts laughing* He was so bad. But I think one of the guys booking the show knew him or something. But to me he felt like he didn’t care at all and only wanted to party with the guys.”

Brian Last: “How about that baseball guy, Goose Gossage?”

Cornette: “Well it was pretty usual that during the offseason some athletes tried the world of pro wrestling. And hey, some of them became really good. You know, Bronko Nagurski, Wahoo, Ernie Ladd, Randy Savage…”

Brian Last: “So was Goose one of them?”

Cornette: *laughs* “No, absolutely not. I guess he wasn’t the worst ever but he had like 2 weeks of training before this. I guess with some proper training and will to get better he could have become good but there weren’t really any time for that.”

Brian Last: “A lot of the fans have also asked about all those future stars having their first steps there. Mick Foley, Typhoon, Sting, Virgil… and I’m really confused about the whole Virgil thing. Chief Vincent Virgil. That’s like way too specific to be a coincidence. But I thought Virgil was called Virgil as a rib to Dusty and later Vincent as a rib to Vince. Right?”

Cornette: “Who knows. I had completely forgotten about it. Maybe Vince asked Virgil all his previous names and thought Virgil was hilarious rib to Dusty? But I haven’t really thought about Virgil in my spare time if we’re being honest.”

Brian Last: “How about the rest of the youngsters? Sting especially was so bad you couldn’t even think it was the same man that would become a huge star in JCP just few years later.”

Cornette: “Sting did have some growing pains. I don’t think he had done anything but Memphis at this point and you know how he sucked there with Warrior. But like I’ve said - the difference between Sting and Warrior was that Sting understood he was bad and tried to get better. And eventually he did! But he was pretty much worthless in his first year. Who were the rest of the young stars?”

Brian Last: “Big Bubba who would later be better known as Earthquake AKA Typhoon AKA Shockmaster - and Mick Foley. And there was Marty Jannetty vignette too!”

Cornette: “Oh yeah. Yeah Foley was pretty good, right? He has always been a good talker, I think. Though I didn’t buy the America stuff at all from him. I think they were trying to ride with Hulkamania’s success or something. Marty was young too and I think this was before all those vices got to him so he was really good even being really new to the business. And Big Bubba… Well I like Fred - still do - but he did kinda stink here.”

Brian Last: “What did you think about the angle? Chief Virgil and Jedi Fred Ottman?”

Cornette: “Oh that was absolutely horrible! Poor Wahoo. I don’t know how they managed to talk Wahoo into it but I can tell he wasn’t happy. I think I remember hearing that they wanted Jay Strongbow there at first…”

Brian Last: “Oh god that would’ve been even worse! At least Wahoo is a good performer.”

Cornette: “Yeah. Strongbow was luckily a road agent for the fed at the time.”

Brian Last: “So a lot of people have wondered what the deal was with Murdoch being so over as a babyface? At least he got a strong reaction from a certain part of the crowd.”

Cornette: “Well, eh. You know. You’ve heard the rumors.”

Brian Last: “The KKK? Really?”

Cornette: “Well the KKK in Colorado was pretty active in the 70s and I guess Dick still had some friends there... “

Brian Last: “Oh boy. That’s actually kinda depressing. Oh well. Moving on I guess. Gotta ask about the Duggan’s world championship win. What was the deal with that Indianapolis thing?”

Cornette: “Well, I don’t think anyone is surprised if I tell no such tournament ever happened. At least to my knowledge. It was just a way to give him the title without wasting any time with tournaments on TV.”

Brian Last: “And lastly - the main event saw your Midnight Express facing Rock N’ Roll Express. How would you rank it in all time Rock n’ Roll vs Midnight matches?”

Cornette: “Oh boy, that’s a tricky one. It’s definitely not the best. But you know, there are like hundreds of those matches and the guys always gave their best to every single one. But this is so early in this feud that it’s hard to tell.”

Brian Last: “Will you be watching next week too?”

Cornette: “You know what - I just might.”

Goldie Rogers, Oakville Beaver, 1997

Painit pitkin Amerikan mannerta 80-luvulla. Onko mitään, mitä tekisit toisin?
  • “Olin WWF:ssä 84-85. Lähinnä alakortin matseja. Se oli masentavaa. Halusin pois. Kävin jopa ottelemassa salaa Coloradossa uuden työpaikan toivossa, koska en halunnut jäädä New Yorkiin.

Wrestling Observer Rewind 1/1985
  • A new territory opened in Colorado. Dave hasn’t seen the show but heard it was alright. Gordon Solie did the commentary with Jim Cornette and the card included Rock N’ Roll Express, Midnight Express, a very young Sting, a very young Mick Foley, Brody, Hansen, Butcher… and honestly this all sounds very interesting to see. I wonder if a tape of this exists somewhere.
  • Dave also notes that Kendo Nagasaki AKA Peter Thornley from World of Sport worked the show (not to be confused with the Japanese wrestler of the same name). Thornley retired in 1978 with some minor appearances in early 1980s. Dave says that apparently the deal is to make him a body guard or manager or similar since he can’t wrestle and take bumps. Fun fact: Kendo Nagasaki returned full time in 1986 and wrestles sporadically to this day.

Haystacks Calhounin arvio: 5/10

Huoh…

Okei.

Okei, he menivät sekaisin tästä Goosesta - joka on muuten loistonappaus, sillä kun katsojamme kanavasurffaavat, he saattavat tunnistaa tämän baseball-tähden.

Sitten Wanhus. Wahoo vaihtoi itse ottelun lopetuksen DQ-voitoksi, sillä onhan tuollainen ihan silkkaa haaskausta. Mieti ensikerralla.

Kana, miksi bookkaat samaa jobberia viikosta toiseen?

Tiedättekö miksi Andre The Giant on niin suosittu? Tiedättekö te miksi minä tein vuosikymmenien uran? Koska kun ihmiset näkivät minut, he olivat naulittuja. Olen elämää suurempi. Kiinnitän huomion. Ja mikä tärkeintä - he pystyvät uskomaan minuun.

Okei, on minulla muutama ilmoitusluontoinen asiakin. Teillä on kaksi suurta house showta tulossa. Rakentakaa näihin tapahtumiin otteluita, sillä kuten tiedätte, TV:n koko idea on myydä livetapahtumia.

No niin, menkääs nyt. Säärtäni kirvelee ja voisin syödä hevosen…

Ja varmaan syönkin.

Jim Cornette Experience: Jim watches Colorado #2

Brian Last: “Aloha Jim.”

Jim Cornette: “Well hello to you my dear Brian.”

Brian Last: “So, did you watch the second episode of Championship Wrestling from Colorado?”

Jim Cornette: “I promised I would, didn’t I?”

Brian Last: “Actually you didn’t - you just said you might.”

Jim Cornette: “Hey now. Of course I wanted to watch it. As you can imagine, this is all new to me too since I don’t actually remember any of it.”

Brian Last: “Not a thing?”

Jim Cornette: “Well some bits and pieces - and obviously when I watch this I recall some stuff. But it’s not like I’ve thought about this one silly territory for the past 30 years.”

Brian Last: “Allright. So first things first, at the beginning of the episode we hear that NWA & Colorado Championship Committee have named a commissioner or ‘matchmaker’ if you will - Haystacks Calhoun.”

Jim Cornette: “Yes - and it actually wasn’t just an on screen role. He actually was a supervisor for those monkeys running the shop who booked the show.”

Brian Last: “I thought he retired in 1980 or 1981 or so.”

Jim Cornette: “He did. But apparently he was really broke and pleaded for a paycheck and this is what they gave him. And it did make sense, really. It wasn’t that physical job and they needed someone they could trust to make sure things stay sane.”

Brian Last: “So how was Haystacks? Did he like it there?”

Jim Cornette: “Oh, he was miserable. He was always grumpy and hated everyone and everything. But I think it was his health failing mostly that got him angry. You know this was just a year before they had to cut his leg due to diabetes.”

Brian Last: “Yeah, I read his last years were really depressing. Refusing to move from the bed and just staring at a wall and all that. Really makes you wonder if things would have gone differently if this territory would have worked out.”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah, well. I don’t think it would have changed anything, really.”

Brian Last: “Do you know if there were any plans for anyone else for that role?”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah, actually I do. They actually tried to get Grizzly Smith from Mid-South. But both Watts and Smith refused because well, Smith had a good gig there and Watts loved him as the on-screen matchmaker.”

Brian Last: “He would have been insane to get out of mid-south during some of their hottest years.”

Jim Cornette: “Oh and I just remembered! This you’ll never guess. Someone - I think it was that Kendo Nagasaki that was there - recommended Jimmy Savile as well.”

Brian Last: “Wait, WHAT?”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah. I think it was just an idea. Could you imagine though?”

Brian Last: “I wasn’t going to mention this with just Grizzly Smith but… Jimmy Savile? It’s like they had a type of sexual deviants. Who next in the recommended pedo ring? Buck Zumhofe?”

Jim Cornette: *laughs* “Hey now! I don’t think anyone knew about Grizzly’s dark secrets at the time.”

Brian Last: “Do you know if anyone ever approached Savile or was it really just a name thrown out there?”

Jim Cornette: “No, but I doubt it. What was the show he was doing?”

Brian Last: “Oh, Top of the Pops was the big one right. Man, Savile was a mainstream celebrity in the UK but I can’t see how that would have worked in Colorado.”

Jim Cornette: “Probably would’ve died a quicker death.”

Brian Last: “Wow… Moving on. Wahoo with Virgil once again with this stupid indian chief play. This time they face Ed Wiskowski - and this is actually pretty interesting because this is just before he would go to AWA and become the really hated pro-Apartheid racist Colonel DeBeers.”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah. I actually didn’t even know much about him. He was mostly in Portland with Owens before and no-one outside Portland really knew what was going on in there. And after this he was in the dying days of AWA so I didn’t see him after either.”

Brian Last: “The racist gimmick really was something else there. You know, changing referee’s because they are black or refusing to fight Jimmy Snuka because he’s not white. Definitely wouldn’t fly today but he really got under people’s skin. Did he get the idea here or what?”

Jim Cornette: “Well, I don’t really know but I have to imagine it was an idea he had for a long time. And it's not that he was racist. Quite the opposite! And he was a really charming man, well liked backstage.”

Brian Last: “Yeah, so I’ve heard.”

Jim Cornette: “Can you imagine this match originally was supposed to end with Wiskowski pinning Wahoo?”

Brian Last: “I can’t think Wahoo was happy about that.”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah, he threw a fit and actually got it changed.”

Brian Last: “Do you think DeBeers minded?”

Jim Cornette: “Well he knew Wahoo was a legend so I doubt it. Back then guys had respect, you know.”

Brian Last: “So at the beginning Wahoo has a really weird promo where he talks about how good Virgil is cooking… err, guinea pigs?”

Jim Cornette: “Oh yeah - and that brought memories. Wahoo hated that line so much. He said he had never been so embarrassed. And he made it known he never wanted to say anything like that ever again.”

Brian Last: “Why did he say it though? It’s not like there were script writers like today.”

Jim Cornette: “I guess whoever booked the segment really loved that line. And Wahoo wanted to show he was a team player since he already refused to job to Ed.”

Brian Last: “So next up was… err, Dick Slater in a Tiger Mask mask against Steve Borden? What was this about?”

Jim Cornette: “I thought you were smart Brian! When you don’t have enough guys around to fill the card you put a mask on someone and doublebook him. Simple.”

Brian Last: “This was such a nothing match and I feel like the idea was just to embarrass Sting. Why did they even book him after the last week’s fiasko?”

Jim Cornette: “Well, he looked good and I think they just wanted to give him experience. And eventually it paid off. Not in Colorado, mind you, but later in his career.”

Brian Last: “Also, after the match… did Sting have a boner?”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah, it really looked like that, didn’t it. I have no recollection of this whatsoever and I don’t think the guys in the back made any remarks about it - at least I don’t remember anything.”

Brian Last: “Black Bart is finally here with Stan Hansen, they are interviewed and after it they just attack a random dude who walks by them with walkman on.”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah, it was pretty good until the last part. I have no idea what idiot thought it would be a good idea to show that the wrestlers might attack whoever was in the studio at any moment.”

Brian Last: ”They also talk about how they want to fight the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express. They sure have made loads of enemies - Midnight, Duggan and Slater later in the evening and now this. Why Hansen & Bart weren’t going to take the titles from Midnight? They could’ve easily been just rugged bad-ass babyfaces.”

Jim Cornette: “That is a good point and to tell you the truth - I don’t know. Rock n’ Roll really was stretched thin here. I guess everyone just wanted to work with them since Morton was so good at making everyone look good.”

Brian Last: “Next up the super patriot Jack Foley faced Jacques Rougeau. No flag matches this time but an evil foreigner nevertheless.”

Jim Cornette: “I think WWF’s influence was really showing here. I wasn’t used to this blatant USA vs foreign heel stuff in south-east. To me this felt like the stuff from the 40s or 50s - but it was 1985 and Hogan loved to fight his foreign enemies so it was back on the menu.”

Brian Last: “What are you talking about? Foreign heels happened all the time.”

Jim Cornette: “Oh, foreign heels were everywhere - yes. But it’s this ultra patriotic character that I really don’t remember seeing that much until Hogan started eating his vitamins.”

Brian Last: “All right, don’t know if I agree there. What did you think about the segment?”

Jim Cornette: “Well, I was surprised how good performer Foley was even at that point. The contents of the promo were maybe not that exciting but it was still a good job. And the match was fine though I wasn’t a big fan of the ending.”

Brian Last: “You don’t like low blows?”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah, it felt kind of out of place. I wasn’t really used to them in the 80s.”

Brian Last: “And finally - our main event - Duggan & his - and this had to be a rib - his protege “Dirty” Dick Slater against Rock ‘n’ Roll Express.”

Jim Cornette: “Yes! I popped. Dick Slater didn’t really think it was funny though.”

Brian Last: “For those listening who don’t understand the joke - Slater is 3 years older than Duggan and had wrestled for about 7 years before Duggan even thought about joining the wrestling business.”

Jim Cornette: “Exactly.”

Brian Last: “So what’s the deal with all this biker stuff?”

Jim Cornette: “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe Eric Bischoff snuck backstage or something. It had something to do with that imaginary tournament in Indianapolis. I guess they really wanted to sell these guys as though guys.”

Brian Last: “By playing music from the 1960s?”

Jim Cornette: “Well, aren’t you afraid?”

Brian Last: “Oh boy. So Rock n’ Roll Express answer the open challenge - and at first I didn’t realize what was wrong with it but… they work towards the Duggan hot tag.”

Jim Cornette: “That caught my attention too! I thought about everything else that Duggan was a heel - at least considering how the crowd loved that baseball guy - but in this match Duggan and Slater clearly worked babyface.”

Brian Last: “After the hot tag Duggan clears house but after that, Goose Gossage comes out, Rock n’ Roll surprises Duggan & Slater and get the victory.”

Jim Cornette: “At least it wasn’t their local champion getting pinned. I guess it made sense considering Rock n’ Roll was a very hot and popular tag team.”

Brian Last: “And then Goose beats up once again Duggan & Slater - and hits him with a DDT.”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah, I think the guys tried to give him a move he could do - and it’s not like Jake Roberts was on national TV yet so it was good looking, unique move that wasn’t the most complicated.”

Brian Last: “So that was the end of that. Did you like the episode?”

Jim Cornette: “Well you know. It’s 80s wrasslin’. Sure there were some stupid shit out there but I’d much rather watch this than whatever is going on in WWE nowadays. Have you heard about the piss segments there? Not like going to take a leak segments, actual people pissing on each other? What has this world gone to…”

Lainauksia shooteista.
Sting, Gospel Advocate, 2001

“… olet varmasti tavannut monia ihmeellisiä promoottoreita urasi aikana. Mikä on typerintä, mitä sinun on ikinä pyydetty tekemään?”
- “Ihan ensimmäisenä vuotenani - siis ihan ekoja juttuja mitä ylipäänsä tein painissa - multa pyydettiin, että söisin ottelun aikana pillerin viagraa, jotta ottelun päätteeksi minulla olisi erektio ja vastustaja nauraisi minulle.”

Wrestling Observer Rewind 2/1985
  • Remember that territory that opened last week with a decent show headlined all the current and future mega stars? Well, they had another show and he heard it was… decent. Not much about it. What’s interesting is that their on-air matchmaker is 600 pound Haystacks Calhoun. As far as I know, this would be the very last thing in wrestling that he would end up doing. And that’s how it goes. You’re one of the biggest attractions of the industry for 20-30 years and then your final job is being a sidenote in a territory that doesn’t even make it to 4 months.
  • Dave also mentions, that while Haystacks is mostly on-screen authority, he also has some pull backstage and apparently has some real power. So while he’s not a booker, he makes sure the books look nice.

Meillä on useamman tuhannen areena täytettävänä, hemmetti soikoon!

Pentele. Katson erityisesti teitä Zemppari, FDR ja Prinssi.

Teme, oletko täysi taliaivo? Wanhus on yrittänyt rakentaa sympaattista tarinaa intiaanipäällikön soihdunviemisestä, missä pahat viholliset kuten tämä Ed Wiskowski ovat piikkinä lihassa. Joten sinä pistät inkkarit hyökkäämään raukkamaisesti toisen kimppuun, jotta Ed voi tehdä sankarimaisen pelastuksen? Ymmärrätkö mitään tästä lajista?

FDR - mitä saatanaa? Mikä pakkomielle sinulla on hyökätä sivustakatsojien kimppuun?

Jim Cornette Experience: Jim watches Colorado #3

Brian Last: “Aloha jim.”

Jim Cornette: “Aloha to you Brian.”

Brian Last: “Due to popular demand we’re back with yet another piece of the forgotten Colorado territory wrestling.”

Jim Cornette: “Yes. Yes we are.”

Brian Last: “So first things first - The Midnight Express once again not there second week in a row?”

Jim Cornette: “I think they were there but for some reason they didn’t make it on air. It didn’t make sense to me then and it doesn’t now.”

Brian Last: “One who is used is the team of Wahoo McDaniel and Virgil. 3rd week in a row.”

Jim Cornette: “Someone in charge said they wanted this match to be short and sweet. However… Wahoo hated everyone in the committee so much he did the opposite. He decided to wrestle a long and grueling match instead.”

Brian Last: “It was mostly just headlocks though.”

Jim Cornette: “Yes, well. It was also poor Fred Ottman having the first year in his career. He just wasn’t ready for what Wahoo had in mind.”

Brian Last: “Sadly this match had some audio issues so the ending was really confusing. First they are brawling and then suddenly ref starts freaking out and the match ends.”

Jim Cornette: “So this should tell you what an amateur hour that place was. They just picked up someone random to do the timekeeping and never bothered to smart him up. So when 10 minutes was up, 10 minutes was up and he started baning the bell. I guess the referee played along to keep the integrity but I can tell you, Wahoo was pissed.”

Brian Last: “Was he supposed to win?”

Jim Cornette: “Absolutely.”

Brian Last: “After the match Wahoo and Virgil start to beat up defenseless Big Bubba… and then our racist hero Ed Wiskowski saves the day. What on earth was that?”

Jim Cornette: “I guess someone in the committee was part of that Colorado section of KKK and thought Wiskowski was the good guy. Either that or the booker had no clue how heels and faces are supposed to work.”

Brian Last: “At least Wiskowski showed some good babyface fire. Maybe it’s a shame he was a heel for most of his peak career. Next up audio issues continue when Rock n’ Roll Express are interviewed by Kip Winger. There’s also some weird new musician. Who was he?

Jim Cornette: “Just some local musician. He was there just to make sure everyone knew how rock they were.”

Brian Last: “... by playing Johnny B. Goode?”

Jim Cornette: “They would have been really rock in the 50s.”

Brian Last: “I just had to check and this was about 6 months before Back to the Future came out and made a hit of it once again.”

Jim Cornette: “There you have it. Ahead of time.”

Brian Last: “Thank god the audio issues are fixed just in time for Hansen and Black Bart to come in and raise havoc.”

Jim Cornette: “Yeah. So I guess the reason Midnight was just sitting backstage was that there were all these other teams they wanted to put on the limelight… and fight Rock n’ Roll.”

Brian Last: “So why not just get some other babyface teams so Rock n’ Roll wasn’t stretched so thin?”

Jim Cornette: “That what I was screaming at them at the time. Hire some new teams! Hire some new teams!”

Brian Last: “Did they listen to you?”

Jim Cornette: “Well we’ll find out.”

Brian Last: “So Bruiser Brody comes out to save the day and Cowboys run away. Then in a twisted shock Brody starts to beat up Express instead of saving them. Isn’t this some Russo level stuff? Multiple turns in the same segment?”

Jim Cornette: “Oh c’mon, it wasn’t nearly that bad. Besides they wanted to sell Brody as this badass loner that was against everybody.”

Brian Last: “But they teamed him up with Abdullah?”

Jim Cornette: “Obviously they didn’t think these things through.”

Brian Last: “And as if that wasn’t enough, they had a match on the card against Gorgeous Electricity. Why have the match? Why not either have another team out there instead of the Rock n’ Roll?”

Jim Cornette: “I don’t remember! I think it was because they really wanted to sell Rock n’ Roll as these never-give-up good guys.”

Brian Last: “But wasn’t that too much? And didn’t it make Gorgeous Electricity look like a bunch of muppets when they couldn’t beat up already beaten Rock n’ Roll Express?”

Jim Cornette: “Who knows what was going on in the committee’s booking sessions but I agree. This didn’t help Gorgeous Electricity at all. But it did make Rock n’ Roll look amazing.”

Brian Last: “In a theme of the show, it’s the second match of the show without a decisive finish - even if the first one didn’t go as planned.”

Jim Cornette: “So if you people think Russo invented shit finishes I’ll have to let you know that idiots existed in this business before. They just didn’t last very long.”

Brian Last: “Next up we have yet another tag match. Brody is out again this time with Butcher and Kendo Nagasaki. What even was the function of Nagasaki here?”

Jim Cornette: “I have no idea and I’m not even sure if we get an answer. He was gone the week after this, you know.”

Brian Last: “And their opponents - and this is a treat - popular NWA jobber George South and… Jumpin’ Jeff Farmer.”

Jim Cornette: “You know I’ve seen those hilarious promos but I had no idea I had ever been in the same territory with that guy.”

Brian Last: “Boy was he awkward. One of the most awkward wrestlers I’ve ever seen.”

Jim Cornette: “Well he wasn’t the star so who cares.”

Brian Last: “Did you know Ric Flair has called George South as one of his favourite opponents?”

Jim Cornette: “What, no? Really? Well how about that.”

Brian Last: “The match goes haywire immediately when Butcher & Brody just beat the living shit out of everyone instantly.”

Jim Cornette: “This was a wild brawl.”

Brian Last: “At least they continued making Brody look like a beast.”

Jim Cornette: “I actually thought this was a great segment - if we forget the ending where they attack the referee.”

Brian Last: “Did I recognize Nick Patrick there?”

Jim Cornette: “He was visiting town but he also knew how to referee and take a beating so they asked if he wanted to take part in it. It did cost a big penny.”

Brian Last: “The last match of the episode saw Goose Gossage in his first match.”

Jim Cornette: “What a treat…”

Brian Last: “First things first. The ring announcer hails Dick Slater coming from Gallifrey. I had no idea what that was but apparently twitter knew to tell me it’s a Dr. Who thing?”

Jim Cornette: “I was just as confused as you were. I know that Kendo Nagasaki liked to help around so maybe he wrote the cue cards and added a little joke? So what is this Gall-I-don’t-care actually?”

Brian Last: “I think it’s a planet in that show. I can assure no-one understood the joke in 1985 in Colorado area.”

Jim Cornette: “Dick Slater sure didn’t get the joke.”

Brian Last: “He really looked pissed.”

Jim Cornette: “He was in a foul mood. I think he knew he couldn’t get anything out of Goose. Ring announcer talking nonsense definitely didn't help.”

Brian Last: “So - Goose. Was this really his first match ever?”

Jim Cornette: “I would believe you if you said it was the first time he saw a wrestling ring. Ha! Yes. I could very well imagine this being his first actual match in front of actual paying people.”

Brian Last: “Poor Dick Slater really had no clue how to work around this guy but they did make it through eventually.”

Jim Cornette: “I don’t get whose wise idea was to put this man in the ring for 10 minutes. They could have done the same exact thing in 2 minutes - even in a single minute - and Goose would have actually maybe even looked good.”

Brian Last: “So the next week Duggan gets to defend his title against Goose. Is it gonna be good?”

Jim Cornette: “Well… Guess.”

Brian Last: “No?”

Jim Cornette: “That is a good guess and I’m leaving it at that.”

Brian Last: “So one last thing. Did you like this episode? Did you like the previous ones more?”

Jim Cornette: “It was not the worst shit show ever though honestly it wasn’t that great either. And I hated all the stupid finishes.”

Brian Last: “They definitely weren’t as impactful when the whole show was full of them.”

Jim Cornette: “However I would still rather watch this than whatever is going on in modern wrestling. Have you heard the latest in Impact Wrestling? They had a match where you had to put an umbrella up the opponent’s ass! Have you heard it? Absolute fucking horseshit. I thought Ed Nordholm was a good guy - I did - but apparently he’s as detrimental to wrestling business as everyone else.”

Bixespaña: “Tämän jakson yllättävänä kuriositeettina Jeff Farmerin harvinainen esiintyminen painissa. Ei se Jeff Farmer, vaan se Jeff Farmer.”

CanOfHurri: “Kuka vittu on Goose Gossage?”

Dick Slater, RF Shoot, 2007

“Oliko hän urasi huonoin vastustaja?”
“Ei, ei missään nimessä. Huonoin… En ala nimeämään nimiä, mutta vuosia sitten kultaisella kasarilla jouduin ottelemaan jotain paikallista urheilukuuluisuutta vastaan. Hän ei ollut mikään Ernie Ladd.”

”Millainen hän sitten oli?”
”Aivan paska.”

Wrestling Observer Rewind 3/1985
  • Colorado’s NWA-affiliate had another TV episode. Dave hasn’t seen it but runs down the card. Dave also mentions how everyone seems to be really high on Rock n’ Roll Express there - apart from Haystacks Calhoun who is running the show on and off-screen.
  • They have also booked a 5000 seat arena in Colorado Springs for the near future. Dave says the roster is strong but Colorado isn’t a wrestling hotbed and doubts they sell even nearly that many tickets.
